I assembled a few raised garden beds last year to grow vegetables in my front garden space. My thought was that it would be easier to create garden beds than it would be to remove grass and plant in the ground.
I added cardboard to kill the grass, then added dried leaves, sticks, branches and logs, before added compost to cover over. It took A LOT of compost!
Pros
Great for small spaces
Adaptable to the user

The dirt warms quicker after the winter than the ground would
Can possibly deter some critters
Grass does not have to be removed, but can instead be stifled
Cons
They can take a lot of organic materials to fill them
They need yearly maintenance (from my experience) '
Wood can chip away
Soil has to be added yearly
