Best Hikes/Nature Walks Around La Crosse, WI

Updated: Feb 19, 2023

Chad Erickson Memorial Park

  • Located on the South Side of La Crosse, this oasis has a small pond and a paved walking path through the woods. You can bring a picnic lunch to sit in a small field, or at the picnic tables on site.

  • The paved trail often features a Story Walk courtesy of the La Crosse Public Library or you can meander, listen and watch for wildlife!

  • They have a small park that is perfect for toddlers to climb, play, and slide. The park also has bathrooms that are open in the warmer months.

Upper Hixon

  • Located near the Weather Ball off of County Rd FA. There is a parking lot where you will have access to various hiking trails most are moderate. They are used regularly by bikers, so take heed when you hike.

  • They also have a dirt track for kids to practice mountain biking as well.

  • A majority of the trails weave down the bluffs into the trees, but there is one (Prairie Loop) if you stay to the left of the fork initially, that meanders around the grassy field.

Gateway Trails

  • The gateway trails can be accessed via a neighborhood off of 29th St S or Ebner Coulee Rd. These access points must be walked, ran or hiked in because people that live in the neighborhood don't want a bunch of cars parked there!

  • You can also drive up to Grandad bluff and hike down the Gateway trails as well.

  • The views of La Crosse are stunning from this view point - also you miss out on the the crowds that Grandad Bluff brings. These are primarily for bikers as well

  • Most of the trails are moderate to more challenging, unless you decided to park at the top and only walk down to the lookout point.

Lower Hixon

  • Last, but not least Lower Hixon is my absolute favorite! Park at the trailhead off of Losey north of the golf course - Edgewood Place.

  • Try following the Hickory Trail, you might get lucky and see some deer.

  • Access to a plethora of trails for all users. Bring your snow shoes, cross county skis, or your running shoes to explore all the trails have to offer.

  • For those looking for a more relaxed stroll, take the path to the right next to the golf course.
